In English, unless specified otherwise, the male includes the female automatically.

In these days of sexual equality - is this still really the case?

IMO it is just lazyness. There are enough words in the English language for us to use where no reference to gender is made at all.

It would surely be better to use use words that do have a gender destinction - only when there is some reason to make this distinction?
