Indeed, congratulations to Pauline, Bernard, and John and all at the Open Door for another excellent Extravaganza!
Dave Webber described the effect of the heat in the small room as providing his first experience of a "boil-in-the-bag folk club"! Nevertheless the intimacy of the occasion contributed greatly to its success, and I think all the artists benefitted from their close encounter with such an appreciative audience.
It was good to hear Steve Turner, who surely deserves a campaign medal for his Napoleonic narrative songs. I enjoyed Farewell to the Gold and other songs from Paul Metsers; and Steve also told some great stories about his tour to New Zealand and Australia. His forthcoming CD on Fellside should be well worth hearing.
Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher were in great form; Bill's wit was tinder dry in the atmosphere, and his brand new electronic accordian was a most formidable instrument. Lots of lovely Lincolnshire songs!
Dave and Anni could be relied on to deliver a Grand Finale, and they didn't disappoint. They have voices to die for, and the interplay of their very different accents is wonderful. I liked their treatment of Pass The Jug Round, though perhaps the interjection of a few yelps and hollers in the chorus would add a touch of Cumbrian colour!
The floor spots all performed to a high standard, and credit to the Open Door for providing a platform for young Patrick to perform. I expect we will hear a great deal more from this young man!
Bernard's traffic light controls at the door were much admired too!
