For a good time, ask someone if the essential part of Christian belief is the crucifixion or the resurrection. Chances are they will say the crucifixion; in the Epistles both Peter and Paul state that it is the resurrection, for without that there would be no proof of the divinity of Jesus of Nazareth and hence no point to the crucifixion.
