Subject: RE: BS: Now it's the bloody Easter Bunny!
Whitsun comes from the habit of, at Pentecost, Confirming people into the Christian church - and wearing white to signify they were being 'born again' - it represented their pure christening robes.
In the Liturigal sense, Easter is not just one day, but lasts for about 50 days. The whole of the Easter period is white - church altars are dressed in white and gold from Easter Day through to Pentecost (Pentekoste, 50 days), some traditions have a break for red at Ascension (40 days later - the word for many was mistranslated as 40).
Whitsun/Pentecost are also popular feasts for baptisms.... Whitsun is quite a modern term as far as language is concerned and is still part of the Easter celebrations. Herr Knoblech wasn't as romantic as you think!
