Happy Birthday!
New York City mayor (1790-1801)
Richard Varrick
was born 3/25/1753
(d.7/30/1831)
He seemed to be the special enemy of working men.
In 1796 the cartmen, clear that varick means "hog" in Dutch, sang:
But now he does a great offence,
It is no thing to mock at,
He takes away the Cartmen's pence
And puts them in his pocket.
