Well, I can't help with the Balfa Bros. version as I haven't heard it, but I can give you this one, collected in the Pays de Beaune, and published in Henri Davenson's Le Livre Des Chansons:

I saw the wolf, the fox and the hare
I saw the wolf and the fox drinking pints;
It was I myself who spied upon them...

It comes with a fine tune in the mode of ré. Davenson mentions the lines

J'ai vu le loup, le renard, l'alouette
J'ai vu le loup, le renard chanter...

turning up as the chorus of a maumarieé song elsewhere, and I have an album made by Jean-Francois Dutertre (1974) which includes a ronde from Normandy with the chorus

J'entends le loup, le renard et la belette,
J'entends le loup et le renard chanter.

Belette is a weasel. All this may be completely useless to you, of course, but perhaps it may give you some clues. Anyhow, it's given me something interesting to do for a while instead of working!
