I suspect, poopsie (how very clever!), that the response will depend a great deal on how the "stupid" question is couched. If a person comes in apologetically, trying to get an answer that they'd never dared ask before, that person gets a different response than the one who breezily asks a loaded question without ever having read one of the numerous threads on it.

Kind of reminds me of a few years ago when two young men with a few hours off from working on their cruiseship decided to climb one of the downtown mountains. It didn't occur to them to wonder whether a trail up the mountain had been devised (in 120 years of settlement!) and they swarmed straight up the mountainside.

Well, they got to a place where they couldn't go farther up, they couldn't go left, they couldn't go right and they were afraid to go down so they started hollering.

A hiking group descending a different mountain nearby heard a repeated HELP! HELP! HELP! and notified the police. The rescue unit sent a party up the trail to try to reach the stranded men and a helicopter unit went up to see if they could lift them off.

This was about 3:30 in the afternoon- they didn't get taken off the mountain until 8:30 that night.

So, yeh. You could get the response you're egging for.

What is "folk"?
