Magnetic compasses are no longer needed for navigation.

I am fairly technologically savvy, but that's a load of...codswallop. GPS is fine, until your batteries fail or you drop the unit and break it. But I'll tell you what I'll do: I'll meet you here or here (along with its Canadian partner) for a three-week-long hike. You bring your GPS and I'll use map and compass. We'll take what we can carry on our backs, no resupply, and we'll walk from one point to another.
