Joan of Arc, when she broke the British siege of Orleans, and at a number of subsequent victories, was a winner so popular that she had attained a virtually superhuman status in the eyes of the French. She may also be numbered among the most tragic losers by her later capture, trail, and execution. As such, she has inspired many songs, movies, books, and other commemorative works.
