I don't have a car; I use the bus, taxis and friends. Sold my car when I came to Juneau, Alaska. The best little car I've ever had- it had the normal four gears plus reverse and then four more in a lower set up. I used to say that little car would climb a wall. The worst mileage I ever got from it was 34 mpg - loaded with luggage and four people going over Willamette Pass in Oregon - in normal driving I got 42. It was a Plymouth Champ hatchback, now discontinued. Of course.

I have a friend who has a small Suburu station wagon and he says he gets 52 mpg.
