well I agree its a question of temperament - most athletes have sort of a competitive edge in place of a personality. Or perhaps I mean sports teachers.

However, people who are really good are secure enough to let the other guy win. Very similar with musicians, headcutting compettions are really for guitarists who should have stuck to being gym teachers.
