My son in law first had dialysis when he was 27 years old while waiting for a donated kidney. Twelve years later he was on it again for a few months while waiting for a second donor. He is now four years into this one. His (ongoing) problem is the disease itself which attacks a donated kidney just as it did his own. Having a different cause, your experience most likely will be very different.

My understanding of dialysis is that, unpleasant as it is, it is doable. It buys time, which is no small thing.
