It is human and not solely American, nature to fear the outsider, the 'other' who may try to steal your stuff, or kill your people to get a bit more dirt for his people, or because you break your eggs at the wrong end or love polka music (or some religious figure or another). So we build fences, or weapons. It isn't nice, it isn't blissful, but in case Joanie hasn't noticed, there are still a lot of folks around the world who don't want to hold our hands and sing we shall overcome.
