Off the top of my head, the saints' medals and pilgim badges were, traditionally, made in chased silver for those that could afford it and cast pewter for the rest.
Modern ones are probably die stamped "German Silver" (cupro-nickel) or a Cu-Ni alloy over a steel core (depending on cost).
