What do you mean, OR? Don't/can't both things happen? Just as a for instance, I know people (several!) who aren't the least bit free to relate to others, unless and until they have an instrument in their hands. At the same time, relying solely on that one outlet, they deprive themselves of a wider life. So to me, the answer is yes and yes.
