Ah, yes, now, I used to work at the Knights Templar School in Baldock. Used to be Baldock County Secondary School until it went comprehensive and the Headmaaster thought he'd move it up market a bit. Worked, too - an excellent school where I actually enjoyed teaching!

Salient feature of the town was the number of pubs. There were about 14 I think in what was (probably still is) a small town where you might expect half a dozen or so. Why? At the junction of the Great North Road (A1) and Icknield Way (A505) and hence an important coaching stop in the 17th & 18th centuries. They formed (and no doubt still do, if they haven't been converted into posh restaurants) the basis of an enjoyable pub crawl.
