Although I've visited there many times, I've never been there long enough to check out the folk scene. I can tell you that the John C. Campbell Folk School is in Brasstown, NC, near Brevard, about a 45 mile drive from Greenville. As thurg mentioned above, Newberry is another place to check out as well as Abbeville. Both towns have a folky atmosphere and have active theater groups but that's about all the info I have on them. I'm assuming you're looking for participatory events.
