I'd try degaussing first, and then look around for a reconditioned monitor. Prices have greatly fallen, especially on the CRT models, and you can even get a new on for under US $125 that would work. If that's too much, check out thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army (or the English equivalents). They're often give working monitors -- but make sure that it works and that if it doesn't you can take it back.
