The song was written in 1901. It is the story of a soldier and his sweetheart during the Spanish American War. My oldest version is by Mac and Bob, c. 1925, and the newest, a tape of friends performing it just a couple of months ago. I probably have the Mac Wiseman version somewhere as well. I will try to post the words later, though I can't do anything about the sound file.
