I heard it that way while growing up, too, but have heard a stringband version (DaCosta Woltz's Southern Broadcasters, maybe?) with something like this:Polly put the kettle on,
Ginny blow the dinner horn,
Polly put the kettle on,
We'll all have tea.And a parody of same:
Polly plays the kettle drum,
Ginny blows the slide trombone,
Mama plays the clarinet,
