Yes Richard that's how I understood it, having had a friend who unknowingly bought a stolen car which the police later seized. It was established beyond doubt that he bought it in good faith, however he still lost the car, and there was no mention of his recovering what he's paid for it.
Another case of caveat emptor I think!
