I remember several references to corn dodgers in the John Wayne - Katherine Hepburn film "Rooster Cogburn." At one point he throws them like rocks as a weapon. They were "trail food" which implies that they wouldn't spoil on long treks.

There is a line in which Hepburn asks Wayne why they are called corn dogers. He tells her he guesses it's because they have to dodge the corn whisky running around in his innards.
