Being young

Is thinking that others care about your exam results
When you don't care about theirs
Or believing that such things matter
And not being even aware

Of the sacrifices made to enable you
To blossom, flourish and grow
To expect credit for how hard you worked
But give little – or not even know

Of the boredom and insults swallowed
For the chance for you to be free
And the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus
Lies told by you and me?

Should resentment shock us?
And producing the odd wild card?
In world where were lying is easy
And we find the truth so hard?

Bad things are done out of fear and hate
