Wives sailing with their captain husbands was good news to the crew. The captain was inevitably kinder to his men; and his wife invariably worked the usual Female Magic, by doctoring the sick, and by having a calming influence on the sailors aboard. The journal kat mentioned is a good read. Only on one occasion did I experience the opposite, where the captains wife did not change his ways with the crew; and we suffered.
