I once hiked the Chilkoot Trail. A challenging 6 day hike that includes climbing a very steep pass in the mountains between the State of Alaska and Northern British Columbia.
At the turn of the century many prospectors had travelled this trail seeking their fortune in gold at Dawson City. There were over 30,000 people who travelled this way. Mostly men and it wasn't easy. Many lost there lives just trying to get there.
A few make-shift towns were set up along the trail. I remember a monument at one of those towns in memory of a woman who cared for the men just like a mother. She would feed them home-cooked meals, restore their health and spirits with kindness.
I thought at the time, I would have loved to be that lady. Mind you, I also aspired to be Florence Nightingale too.
