Oooo--I had the most amazing experience at Dinosaur in the Utah section of the park. I drove off of the highway (following a park road, not X-country!) and up onto a plateau for lunch. It was a lovely clear day, I was alone, with my cat, on my way from Texas to Washington. I opened the cooler and got out my lunch fixings, and my ears were positively ringing--the silence was so amazing. No wind, no birds, no traffic or people or squirrels--nothing. I have only heard such complete silence out of doors a couple of times, and found it incredibly powerful.
