Thread Name: West Somerset Folk Festival 2006
Subject: Lyr Add: unnamed song
A wonderful little festival with glorious weather, glorious singing, and glorious cream teas. A grewat vote of thanks to Di, Mike and all their helpers. I'm sure all but the footie fans enjoyed every minute: I wrote and sang this for them on Saturday evening:

SONG WITH NO NAME YET (maybe THE FIRST OF JULY or GELSENKIRCHEN - other suggestions welcome)

One Saturday afternoon, as down sat we
To watch the World Cup on our TV
To beat the Portugese was our intent
In Gelsenkirchen
In Gelsenkirchen
And it was a hot and a steamy day

The very first half that our brave lads played
Nobody scored, but we were not dismayed
"Cheer up, my lads", Captain Beckham did say
"Brave Lads of honour
Brave Lads of honour
Old England she will gain the day."

But early in the second half
Our captain's wounds forced him to limp off
And unto Rooney a red card did flow
So he went off too
So he went off too
And all our men were filled with woe.

Our very first penalty, their keeper saved
Then Hargreaves kept our slim hopes alive
But then Ricardo saved a couple more
We'd not have beat him
We'd not have beat him
If we had played for evermore

And when to England they do return
We'll call them losers, and our backs we'll turn
And tell our tender old mother dear
"That Swede, he's useless
That Swede, he's useless
And we never shall see him no more.
