The British were not story- book heroes in WWII, and there was a touch of my enemies enemy among the extreme Scots and Welsh nationalist fringes, there were unreconstructed pre- war fascists around, and there was a bit of (with hindsight) scarcely forgiveable starry-eyed idealism among pacifists, but the country as a whole was pretty solid. We were, after all, fighting the Germans (again).
