Kat, at my lowest I have really enjoyed my little plucked psaltery-- I can pick out a note at a time with my eyes closed, not worrying about any tune but just letting each note ring, long and peaceful. You might consider taking yours along to do that, too, or let the ill person run their fingers over it for a few minutes with no goal of "playing" it but just intoning individual notes at random.
