I have alway thought guilt to be a negative emotion. But if this feeling - when you have done something wrong - prevents you from repeating the bad thing, perhaps guilt is not so negative at all?

Perhaps being forgiven by representatives of an organised religion and removing this guilt only makes a repetition of the bad thing more likely?
