Few war leaders have said to their people, I can promise you nothing but blood, toil, tears, and sweat.
Churchill admitted that they would have to fight on their own beaches, fields, streets and hills. He could not promise victory, only that surrender would not be considered.
Preparations were made to fight on after defeat and occupation.
