Thread Name: BS: I got Moles
Subject: RE: BS: I got Moles
As the website, and quote from it, indicate, the success of the many guaranteed-sure-fire methods is more imagination than reality. Poisons of any kind are unlikely to work. Gas, flooding, etc are useless, because all the mole has to do is push a bit of dirt up to plug the tunnel.
The only method the farmers and ag agents recommend is trapping, and the only trap that's commonly used is a "spear trap" - usually just called a mole trap. It's placed straddling the tunnel, with a trigger plate against the dirt. If you "open up" the tunnel so that fresh air gets in, the mole sometimes will come back to close up the hole (to keep the rain out?). The dirt of the tunnel actually is loose, and "rises above the mole" as he moves along, which trips the trigger and spears the mole.
The same "open up the hole" and stand by with a shovel can be used, and one can sometimes "toss the mole" to where one can be captured, but few people can dig fast enough, or accurately enough, to do more than throw a lot of dirt - and no mole - all over the yard. This is a good assignment for a kid, since it keeps the kid quiet for a while; but it's better for "kid training" than for "mole catching." (I received significant expert advice and training in this manner when grandpa got annoyed at some juvenile antic or another. I excavated very few moles, despite there being plenty of them available - but I got a lot of "training.")
A problem is that the tunnel often isn't exactly a "mole highway" where the critter keeps going back and forth. It's mostly just a "where he was" and by the time you see one the mole is done with that excavation and is unlikely to come back through. He's busy making a new one somewhere else.
