From my experiences, volunteers at nursing homes or hospitals have more hoops to jump through than the paid entertainers. You'll probably need references, a police check, a TB screening, and proof of a flu shot (in season). Also, the institutions often want a volunteer commitment of at least six months, and often want you to do an orientation session.
