When I first learned how to play a few tunes on the fiddle, anything I played on the E string seemed particularly loud and painful to my ears. It wasn't that I was out of tune, it was just LOUD and that pitch, well, OUCH. It didn't take long before that didn't bother me anymore at all. New strings may be helpful and the mute works wonders.   Good luck to you. Your ears will get used to it.
