Thread Name: 2006 Obit: Paul Nelson-Little Sandy Review editor
Subject: RE: Obit: Music writer Paul Nelson RIP (July 2006)
Warren,
Thanks for that. Those old "Little Sandy Reviews" that Paul Nelson and Jon Pankake & cohorts put out were prized by me for the decade of the '60s and beyond. Their biting criticisms were usually right on in their insight and severity. If they criticized a musician/folksinger it was because they needed to hear those harsh words. If they listened to Mr. Nelson's words, their music, after that, was generally quite a bit better as a direct result.
I'm holding a copy of the Little Sandy Review with John and Jackie Kennedy on the cover--an illustration showing the prez and his lady picking a guitar and singing. It was the height of the folk scare and most of us folkies identified with and admired J.F.K. back then. (See my thread here in this forum where I posted MANY songs from my Kennedy songs collection--now at the Archive Of Folk Culture in the Library Of Congress.)
Yes, this is grievous news. Paul Nelson was a truth teller!
And, Warren, even while this is sad, old friend, it's good to connect with you again. I hope you are well!
