I guess we have come full circle, Bill D. Of course, that's easy for a snake. ;)
This Johnny Rivers site lists "The Snake" as being by Oscar Brown, Jr., but I don't know if they meant to say he wrote it. Or, if they did, that they are correct.

They have that pesky word as "comforter," instead of "coverture."
