This Johnny Rivers site lists "The Snake" as being by Oscar Brown, Jr., but I don't know if they meant to say he wrote it. Or, if they did, that they are correct.
They have that pesky word as "comforter," instead of "coverture."

There's another song I remember, sung by Harry Belafonte, called "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," which has a verse about Adam and Eve in the Garden Of Eden.
"... Garden of Eden was very nice, Adam never work in Paradise. Eve meet snake, Paradise gone - She make Adam work from that day on. ..."
