In the future, with battery-powered cars 'common', I predict there will be a booming business in 'rental' of some sort, where you undertake longer trips by changing vehicles at 'stations', much like the Pony Express in the early USA. The batteries will be recharged by the station, and you will head off in a recharged car.
It may be that only a few will actually own their own cars, and that you will have a 'vehicle credit card' where you can buy 'time' to suit your driving habits. Rates to vary according to size, luxuries, etc...
