I can think of a few ideas about why it was pitched in.....

An Old Religion person getting 'pissed orf' about the new Religion, or having converted, pitching it in as an offering....perhaps?

Druid Prince is a GOOD book, non fiction, about an apparently willing human sacrifice to the Old Gods. Highly reccomended.
