Hi Azizi, I'm a New Zealander, also known as a Kiwi.
New Zealand was named by a Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, (for whom the Tasman sea is named) and I understand he came from Zeeland, in the Netherlands. But the Dutch effectively ignored NZ and Captain James Cook turned up a few years later and named other parts of the country.
The Maori people had been here for several hundred years but they tended to be a bit wild, fighting amongst themselves and doing nasty things to captives, including the sailors who arrived here looking for whales and seals.
Yes, there are/were a lot of seals here and their skins were worth money. See 'Davy Lowston'. This is a very short, generalised history!
