Subject: RE: BS: Bat dung question???...
Okay, folks, I skipped straight to the bottom once the guano was identified as coming from bats. Sorry if this is repetition, but it bears repeating. I didn't click on Bruce's link, but Bobert, do you know what histoplasmosis is? It's a nasty lung infection that involves a cough and a fever and it lasts for weeks and weeks. My ex caught it when he was cleaning up a dead bat in Mammoth Cave where he was a park naturalist. The dust he stirred up was enough to infect his lungs. It is endemic in the cave country so the doctor he saw wouldn't qualify him for workman's comp, but we all knew how he got it. He missed something like 6-8 weeks of work and was feeling puny for quite a while after that, and took the first job offer that came along after that just to get out of Kaintuck and away from the caves. (And that's how I goddamned ended up in Texas, folks!)

You catch histo from bird and bat droppings, primarily. You may have had a mild case at some time in the past, depending on where you live, and may have built up immunity. But if you haven't, check around and find out about it.

SRS--taking this question very seriously.
