...than the majority of Americans, who either have dropped out of the electoral process all together, or who now identify themselves as independents.

That is what I believe. And that majority of Americans does not seem to be either to the left of the liberal Democrats or the right of conservative Republicans, as the spin doctors and pundits love to claim. They are simply not engaged with the political process, because they know both the electoral system and the political establishment is hopelessly corrupted, and our system of governance badly broken.

So they no longer participate in the process at all, or vote only when someone fires them up enough to overcome their hopelessness and despair.
