We used to find a lot of the Privet Hawk Moth caterpillars in my London childhood, not seen any in Cheshire, but maybe I haven't been looking (I used to walk home from school past streets of privet hedged gardens).
That Magpie Moth does look pretty but is caterpiilars can strip gooseberry bushes completely bare of all leaves.
