Thread Name: Lyr Add: The World Turned Upside Down (Rosselson)
Subject: Lyr Add: THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN (Rosselson)
We do have this in the DT ( SongID=7972 - how should I link to this, anyway?), but there are some critical wording differences, so I wanted to list them here:
This is from Rise Up Singing (1992 edition, p. 187)
(Differences from current DT version in italic)
In 1649 to St George's Hill A ragged band they called the Diggers Came to show the people' s will They defied the landlords, they defied the laws They were the dispossessed reclaiming what was theirs
Chorus: "We come in peace" they said "to dig and sow We come to work the lands in common and to make the waste land grow This earth divided we will make whole So it willcan be a common treasury for all
The sin of property we do disdain No one has any right to buy and sell the earth for private gain By theft and murder they took the land Now everywhere the walls springrise up at their command.
They make the laws to chain us well The clergy dazzle us with heaven or they damn us into hell We will not worship the god they serve The god of greed who feeds the rich while poor folkmen starve
We work, we eat together, we need no swords We will not bow to the masters or pay rent to the lords Still we are freeWe are free mentho'though we are poor You Diggers all, stand up for glory, stand up now!"
From the men of property, the orders came They sent the hired men and troopers to wipe out the Diggers' claim Tear down their cottages, destroy their corn They were dispersed, but still - Only the vision lingers on
"You poor take courage, you rich take care The earth was made a common treasury for everyone to share All things in common, all people one We come in peace" - the order came to cut them down
The metadata is: Copyright 1975 Leon Rosselson, c/o Fuse Records, 28 Park Chase, Wembley Park, Middlesex, England HA9 8EH. Used by permission. -- The Diggers were one of many radical movements (incl. the first Quakers) that sprang up during the time of Oliver Cromwell. They were one of the first groups anywhere to articulate a clearly socialist view of society. They actively resisted efforts of landowners to fence in and take over ownership of what were originally large tracts of land held in common by villages. On his "For the Good of the Nation" & his "That's Not the Way It's Got To Be" (w/Roy Bailey, FuseRecs). In SO! 24-4. On Dick Gaughan, "A Handful of Earth" & Billy Bragg "Betw the Wars".
