I just remembered that I had a similar, but opposite, discussion with Pete Betts (mudcatter Betsy) in Middlesbrough 30-odd years ago. At that time I was singing a lot of American singer-songwriter songs and claiming that songs should have meaning as well as being entertaining, while Pete was trying to persuade me that a song could be entertaining just for its own sake. I seem to have come round to his way of thinking! Well argued Pete, even if it's taken a long time to get there.
