I hope the Song For Lincolnshire doesn't result in a Lincolnshire version of what we have over in the North West where I've been exiled for a few years now.....the Folk Cabaret. These are the bands like the Houghton Weavers, Fivepenny Piece, Oldham Tinkers and Gary and Vera Aspey who specialise in doing "Lancashire Evenings" where you know two things: 1. That at some point during the evening you'll be served a Hot Pot Supper with pickled red cabbage, and 2. You will have a whole evening of contempory songs that are obliged to be as full of Northern cliches as possible - clogs, flat 'at, pit, mill, poor, shawl, tin bath etc etc - usually delivered in the "when I wuz a lad" mode. Thankfully very little of this makes it into the actual folk clubs, more or less resticting itself to special nights at the local town hall, social clubs and the like. Thank goodness that in people like John Connoly, Dave Evardson and Co, Lincolnshire has songwriters who can write songs about past times with a bit more subtlety!
