I've heard the latter line done a couple of ways...

'Balaam's ass' which is a bibilical non-sequitor of biblical
proportions.

Far more amusing is the way Celeste Bernardo used to do it
before 11 at SF Chantey sings...

...and the beef was salt as Lot's wife's......donkey

Personally, I find 'cheeky' a lot more amusing than 'bawdy'
