Just your point about triplets, any good MIDI player should be able to do much better than 1/4, 1/2, 1/4, assuming the MIDI file has better timing resolution. This should be the case because any MIDI recorder should also be able to do much better than that. The MIDI spec provides for MUCH greater timing resolution than that.
