Thread Name: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born
Subject: RE: BS: 3rd Rare White Buffalo Born
BTW - there are two types of White Buffalo - the albino ones - which are born white and usually stay white; and the "other type" - frequently born coloured and turning white, or born white and changing colour, or changing colour several times over lifetime.

Then there are some that have beefalo in their ancestry - which negates all bets because they can get the white from the non-bison genes.

Albinism in bison appears to be a partially expressed trait in many instances - true albino's should have pink eyes, they may be blind or deaf; many "albino" bison have blue eyes, and they are NOT prone to blindness or deafness. There haven't been enough of them or enough studies to determine whether this is an expression of the albino gene (suspected as usually such an animal has true albino relatives nearby in the family tree) or a "dominant white" condition such as in some other species.

The family of white buffalo in flagstaff appears to be a seperate mutation - they are dark eyed
