I first heard of the legend in a garbled form as a kid, as an episode of the old "Rin Tin Tin" TV show, complete with the post commander (Called Rip Masters, I believe, in the series) singing a song about the legend around a joint campfire of Cavalry and friendly Indians, each verse ending with "...The Whi-i-i-i-ite Buffalo..."with "Buffalo, Buffalo, Buffalo..." echoed by those around the campfire (in perfect harmony, sounding, naturally enough, like the same chorus that seemingly sang the theme songs of three quarters of those TV Western theme songs). In the show, only the true of heart,or something of the like could actually see one, and of course Corporal Rusty sees one on the horizon at the end of the show, when he's running from a Buffalo stampede and falls down, and when he looks up again there are buffalo grazing calmly all around him and some friendly Indians and his Cavalry buddies standing around him, saying "Yes, I believe you saw it." There was a bad guy involved in the plot, too.
Did anyone else remember this? Or am I either just dreaming or extremely noble and true of heart?
