There was also the tradition of giving the child the mother's maiden name as a second Christian name - I have a whole branch of my family called 'Whittle-Wills', a double barrelling that can be traced back to when James Wills married Elizabeth Whittle in 1805 and gave every one of their 8 children Whittle as a middle name. Their eldest Reuben did the same to each of his 8 children and so it became part of their surname.

But then again... how do we know that the song wasn't written from the point of view of a Mr Bailey? It's a common enough name.
